Join White Island Tours for a unique eco-adventure to White Island - New Zealand's most ACTIVE volcano!
The day trip includes an eighty minute journey each way aboard one of our purpose built luxury vessels. Sharing our knowledge of all the bird and marine life that we see is part of the day and as we have a permit to view dolphins and whales, we will spend time with these mammals whenever we see them.
Upon arrival at White Island you will be transported via inflatable boat to a wharf, where you will climb a ladder and negotiate some boulders before reaching the shore. Guides will give a full safety briefing before we set off on a 2 hour guided walking tour of the active crater.
White Island has an intriguing, vibrant landscape of steaming mounds, hissing fumaroles, lava bombs, colorful crystals, unusual rock formations, bubbling mud pools and hot thermal streams! Venture to the edge of the spectacular crater where your guides will explain the workings of the volcano and point out evidence of past eruptions. Explore ruins of an historic sulphur mining factory and learn about the catastrophes and final demise of the mining operation.
Back on board the boat, you can sit back, relax and enjoy your lunch while the Captain takes you to view a colony of gannets or seals (seasonal), before heading home. The complete journey takes approximately six hours.
Tours depart daily (weather permitting), and bookings are essential. Lunch, refreshments and safety gear are provided, and the landing fee is included. Fully enclosed footwear with good grip is essential.
