Summerhill Recreational Farm is located at 319 Reid Rd, Welcome Bay,Tauranga. David and Chloe Blackley have privately owned it since 1961. It's 20 minutes drive to Tauranga, 15 minutes to Papamoa and Mt Maunganui and 10 minutes to Te Puke. Reid Rd is located at the Te Puke end of Welcome Bay Rd, 3km up Reid Rd. A car parking area, toilet, shower and information hut are provided.
The recreational area is over 130 hectares. It's bounded in the west by Reid Road and to the east by the Fulton Hogan Quarry and the Papamoa Hills Cultural Heritage Park. Its elevation provides spectacular views from Waihi Beach in the north, across Tauranga and Mount Maunganui, the Bay of Plenty to Cape Runaway in the east.
The farm sits at an altitude of 250 metres above sea level. It has cool summers and mild winters. It's a mixture of open pasture, mature exotic trees, and remnant native forest. At the southern end of the farm is an avocado orchard. All these trees have been planted over a period of 30 years. There are several streams and a dam with an associated pond. Expansive views, picnic areas, specimen forests, Mongolian Gers, and great single track for mountain bikers as well as challenging trails for all levels of walkers.
Track Information Tracks are well marked. The network follows a livestock trail, farm and forestry tracks and purpose built track is being added via keen volunteers at working bees. Currently there is about 20km available for the enthusiastic route finder. Tracks can be steep and will be slippery after rain. Mountain biking is more cross-country style providing challenge for all levels. We are a non-profit organisation and all donations including voluntary work and materials all help to develop the facility. For as little as $25 a year you can become a Friend of Summerhill, your donation will help support this great recreational venue.
No dogs allowed. Summerhill is open 7 days, dawn till dusk.
