Te Urewera National Park contains the largest tract of native forest remaining in the North Island of New Zealand. With over 650 different plant species it is the most diverse botanical region in the country. Over centuries Maori tribes learned to live in harmony with the dense native forest and harsh conditions. Today the local Maori people still have strong links with the land.
Perched high in the mountains in the heart of the National Park is Lake Waikaremoana. A track was built around its shores in the 1960's by school children. In recognition of its beautiful scenery and important natural features the track is classed as one of NZ's "Great Walks." Walking Legends offers you the opportunity to experience the beauty and mystery of Lake Waikaremoana in maximum comfort and safety.
