We invite you to discover the essence of Rotorua; its people, culture and volcanic landscape. Let us share with you the great stories and legends that have shaped the past and present of this fascinating region.
The history of the Rotorua spa, the eruption of Mt Tarawera, the treasures of Te Arawa and the moving story of 28 Maori Battalion - our vibrant exhibitions capture the imagination and include two dramatic cinema experiences.
At Rotorua Museum you will see, hear and even feel the great stories of Rotorua, especially during the high impact cinema experience 'Rotorua Stories', that literally leaves visitors 'a little shaken'.
'Rotorua Stories' takes visitors on an educational adventure, visiting the world famous Pink and White Terraces and plummeting 13km into the belly of the earth to learn the scientific and mythological answers to Rotorua's volatile landscape. They encounter great Arawa ancestors and legendary figures, and experience a rather 'active' portrayal of the eruption of Mt Tarawera.
The Rotorua region has a fascinating past. The Museum also has three galleries of changing exhibitions featuring programmes of international, national and local fine art and photography.
Surrounded by bush walks, geothermal fields and the shores of beautiful Lake Rotorua, we are situated within the Edwardian elegance of Government Gardens - an historical location offering the perfect setting for picnics, walks and relaxation.
